Long Bright River by Liz Moore

5.0

My December BOTM pick was a quick read that is marketed as a thriller, but is also a touching story about family and forgiveness.  Long Bright River follows Philadelphia police officer, Mickey, as she patrols the neighborhood of Kensington where her younger sister, Kacey, is living on the streets addicted to drugs and selling her body.  When there is a rash of killings in the neighborhood and Kacey disappears, Mickey risks her job and life to try and find her sister.

This book feels so relevant right now with the opioid epidemic killing thousands without discrimination.  I appreciated the author's compassionate treatment of the women in the story that were dealing with addiction and turning to prostitution.  The picture Moore paints is bleak and depressing but also hopeful.
