Ruthless by Carolyn Lee Adams
4.0

Target Audience: Mature high school

"She was supposed to be his seventh victim. He may end up her first." That quote (taken from front cover) pretty much tells you all you need to know about this book without spoiling anything. Very exciting read; I could not bring myself to put it down.

Ruth has been competing in horse shows since the tender age of 3, and winning is just something she does. Something she has to do, no matter what anyone else might think about her. Ever since his mother, Jerry hates redheads. They're spoiled, feisty, and don't know their place. He decides to teach Ruth a lesson, to purify her before he purifies the world of her. But as he soon finds out, they don't call this redhead "Ruthless" for nothing.

The action and pacing of this book was wonderful. There were sections where I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, but also the necessary breather spots to let the readers catch their breath. The flashbacks that reveal more about the characters' pasts don't detract from the main plot at all.

The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because I felt like the book touched on too many problems without really 'solving' them. By that I mean
SpoilerRuth's faith, her parents' fights, nature vs nurture, human nature, good vs evil
All these issues were explored to varying depths, but I didn't quite feel a sense of closure or find a theme about any of them. Besides that, thrilling read!

Language: All curse words used, I think. Not often but they're all in there
Romance: Just a little bit of actual romance, but nudity is mentioned
Gore: Blood, bubbling hydrogen peroxide, a character beating another to death
Trigger Warning: Alcoholism, physical abuse, mentions of rape
