The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty
4.0
Simplified summary:
Infamous retired pirate goes on one final adventure.
Opening lines:
In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Review:
A group of misfit pirates, a heist of epic proportions, magical creatures and demons, giant sea monsters - I mean, what's not to love? The structure of the novel is very interesting. It starts off like most heist type novels do: a retired leader getting pulled in for one last gig, getting the crew back together, coming up with a plan to retrieve the treasure, plan goes awry, so on and so forth.
However, there's a big twist in the narrative about halfway in that caught me off guard. I was on the fence about whether I found this to be things happening for the sake of things happening or something more eccentric and refreshing. I landed in the latter and once I just immersed myself in the story (which this author makes it very easy to do), I had the best time.
