Neon Gods by Katee Robert
4.0
Overall rating: 4/5
Lowkey it was a mid romantasy but it was a lot better in focusing on the romance and then balancing the plot due to the simple world-building and using familiar character mythology. I was able to enjoy it a lot more than other romantasy books I've read so far so well done Katee Robert. You have been put on my author like list and I'll happily continue this series.
What really made me like this series was Hades. Unlike in The Games Gods Play Hades wasn't a one-dimensional character. We got his POV and got to see him falling for Persephone and got to see him dealing with the trauma that Zeus has caused. I really liked his POV ngl and I wished I got more of it and to see him interact with the community because he seems like a great leader in the Lower City and his people follow him out of loyalty when in contrast people follow Zeus out of fear. Him coming to terms with his feelings for Persephone was also super cute as he found the most "boring and mundane" things to be treasured moments which speaks volumes because most romance books that are as erotic as this one usually focus on the moments in between sex, which as an asexual (yes ik i say this a lot... fight me (ง•̀.•́)ง), I couldn't care for.
As for Persephone, she was... ehhhh mid. There were times were I liked her and there were others where I thought she was very "cookie-cutter badass wanna be turned into damsel in distress"... I especially thought this in the beginning and lowkey I was wondering if the author was hinting at something.Lowkey I thought girly had a eating disorder but that plot point came and went so fast I got whiplash... Towards the end she got a lot more likeable and I was actually impressed with her characterization. Her plan was pretty good ngl and I wish Demeter told Persephone what she wanted to do and maybe we could've had a badass assassination/spy plot type of thing going but oh well.
Overall I wouldn't take this book too seriously as the fantasy element is simple and easy to understand and the writing is a bit goofy and corny but take that from the POV of a person who couldn't care for smut.
Will I continue the series? I don't see why not. I enjoyed it and deem it as a palette cleanser.
P.S. that ending battle felt like a co-out ngl but it's not a dark romance so ig I'll let it slide....
