On the Jellicoe Road
by Melina Marchetta
I really loved this book. It was both very realistic and very dreamlike at the same time, and although there were some dramatic events, they never felt overdone. I could very easily picture this book as an indie movie or miniseries, but also as a Hayao Miyazaki movie (the interactions/relationships of the students reminded me of From Up on Poppy Hill).
It had some themes and plot elements that were similar to Moon Over Manifest and the Marauders from Harry Potter, so I'd recommend for fans of those two books/series.
