While this has not succeeded in totally jarring my life, I feel satistfactionally jarred. If you are looking for true closure about what happens to Jonas's original Community, this is not the book for you. There is, however plenty of closure pertaining to Gathering Blue, Messenger, and "what happened to Gabe?". This book is definitely NOT middle grade, it is beautifully crafted YA. And if you haven't read the Giver sequels, then I am here to tell you that you ARE missing out. Lois Lowry is already a masterful author, and the sequels are amazing even as stand-alones. Lowry's depictions of physical disability are important representations missing from YA. Really a significant read.
And to anyone confused about the timeline in the Quartet:
15 years
The Giver (part 1 of Son) (both over the course of ~1 year) -- 1-2 years -- Gathering Blue (part 2 of Son (over the course of 8 years, starts right after part 1)) -- 6-7 years -- Messenger -- 7 years -- part 3 of Son (Claire arrived in the village shortly after the end of Messenger)
