Belladonna by Karin Slaughter
4.5

slaughter has a talent for telling stories, making the reader feel invested. the way slaughter describes feelings feels genuine, real. i often felt seen, especially at the end.

sara is a great character. she’s a strong fmc, which i often seek for in books. i loved the depth of her character! she’s really perfect in an imperfect way.
jeffrey is okay, sometimes heʼs ... off. he cheated on sara, they work together, thereʼs a thing between them again. as someone who has been cheated on, this is a big no. but his character depth is still good, i just think that sara is a bit too naïve there. or iʼve got too many trust issues. either way, the cheating trope is one of the worst things in books.
and lena.. she’s ok. i think she’s another strong fmc, which is great, but i think she’s a little too homophobic at times. she doesnʼt show it in book 1 as much as in book 2, her statement in book 2 is just a red flag. but i could relate to her at times, in the end, especially. she’s still said some problematic things and i absolutely donʼt like her for that lmao.
nan and the other characters were pretty fine. i liked most of them.

i still knew who the killer was as soon as they got mentoined. i have zero empathy for them and theyʼre sick and should seek therapy. atp i have to protect christianity. poor christians. dealing with such a killer. (and it doesnʼt get any better in book 2 iʼm sorry my christians for having to deal with these idiots.) the story was triggering at times, but it really doesnʼt influence the rating at all. i decided to read this book when i knew i could stop. i donʼt regret it.

karin slaughter really is the queen of thrillers and i love this book, her way of understanding what people may feel like and how she describes the feelings.
