Mr. X by Clarissa Wild

3.0

*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

What really grabbed my attention at first was the synopsis. I love dark romances, so this one seemed like it had the potential to wow me. Unfortunately, the potential was there, but the story never reached that point where I connected to it or to the characters.

Jay is a drug addict and stripper that sells herself to the strip club's customers in order to get her next hit. What appeared to be just a routine night in a motel room with a customer suddenly takes a bad turn when she is face-to-face with a scarred stranger. With a gun pointed to her head, Jay has no choice but to obey his every command.

Mr. X was somewhat of a complex and interesting characters. He is definitely dark and twisted, and I from the get-go I wanted to find out what he wanted with Jay and why. Though it is assumed from the beginning that they have a shared past, but it isn't until later when it's all revealed.

The author had a very interesting plot to work with, but the end result just didn't work for me. I wanted more detail of some aspects of X's back story. I also found his reason for revenge a little lame since I thought the main character wasn't at fault for what happened to him. I also wanted to connect to Jay's character throughout the book, but because of her actions, it never happened.

Overall, I thought the idea of it was interesting. I liked the flashbacks and the fact that Mr. X was so ruthless. I also think that the overall problem I had was that I have read so many dark romances that I have really high-standards for them. If you like dark and twisted reads with an interesting plot, go for it! It made not have wow-ed me like I wanted, but it may be for you.
