The Dance Tree by Kiran Millwood Hargrave
4.0

More than anything, this book makes me thankful I don't live in 1500s Strasbourg (and reflect on just how large a role religion played into every day life and politics then).

First third of this book is a bit slow, as you follow Lisbet and her bees, the second third picks up steam as you puzzle out the story between Ida (her friend) and Nethe (her recently released sister in law), and the final third is can't-put-down as the three women navigate carving space in this awful world for themselves. Throughout, there are vignettes of other women who get swept up in the dancing plague (how had I never heard of that before) while trying to escape their lives.
