Symphony for a Deadly Throne by E.J. Mellow

4.0

It's 18 months since I finished the second volume in this series and I had to remind myself what the trilogy was about. However, I needn't have worried as the plot is very simple. The girl has to pass some tests and the boy has to avoid a marriage of convenience. That they burn for one another is never in doubt, and the book spends a not inconsiderable amount of time on their mutual desire which tip-toes round soft-core without being particularly erotic.
This book hurtles along and I got the impression the author was so deperate to get the words down on the page that she forgot herself at times. A couple of typos crept in, 'reverie' for 'reverence', 'rapid' for 'rabid', the latter appearing in this sentence, "They were rapid animals fighting for who could touch bare the other quickest."
I quite like it, as it conveys a breathless desperate confusion, a bit like those rapid cut fight scenes in films like The Bourne Identity.
I also liked "Finally knocking unsteady her opponent." which has a marvellously old-fashioned feel to it. Quite at odds with the rest of the book but still nice.
