The Mysterious Island
by Jules Verne
Like “Lord Jim” it’s slow going for most of the book but then really picks up at the end. Captain Nemo doesn’t even show up until the last 10% of the story (turns out he’s what is “mysterious” about the island) and dies shortly thereafter! He’s such an interesting character, and I wish we could have had more of him. I suspect there is a good bit of Verne himself in Nemo, a.k.a. Prince Dakkar. Each of the other characters serve their function, though the book could have benefitted from a little more character development and background.
I was impressed with Verne’s apparent extensive knowledge of chemistry, engineering, and shipbuilding! He spares no details here when describing the years-long efforts of the castaways to survive and thrive on what they dub Lincoln Island. Overall a smart, adventurous read!
