Madame Bovary
by Gustave Flaubert
I really enjoyed this. Emma Bovary is a fantastically nuanced character. I got a real feel for rural french society of the time. I love the way so many people are partly to blame for her fate, and yet there is no out-and-out villain, certainly not Emma herself.
This is one of those Classics which everyone says you ought to read. I held out for a long time expecting it to be boring. It really isn't. I'm glad I've got this one under my belt. It was great to read.
