Absolute Batman (2024-) #1 by Nick Dragotta, Scott Snyder

4.0

Been hearing so much about the new Absolute series and finally gave it a go. I didn’t hate the Batman book.

I’m not a fan of all the swearing, even when censored. I shouldn’t be surprised by all the violence, Scott Snyder always writes that. The reimagining of this age old story is interesting to me.

Bruce isn’t wealthy, he’s the son of a teacher and social worker. He’s still dealing with tragedy, but perhaps he’ll be more grounded. I like that there are more characters of colour here, it brings such an authenticity to Gotham, one that’s usually missing in the white washed, gentrified version of America a lot of comics present.

I enjoyed the art, even though it’s less precise than I like. Aside from one random panel of a woman in a barely there bikini, most of the art was neutral and not sexist like most comic art tends to be. The violence is implied or stated and the gore isn’t shown.

I think I’ll check out more of this, especially the take on Batman’s rogues gallery.
