Toast: The Story of a Boy's Hunger
by Nigel Slater
emotional
funny
medium-paced
I loved these vignettes, each depicting a memory around food, and the voice of the narrator who really does sound like a little boy, telling us about his "evil" stepmother who forces him to tidy up and wants him to do chores, his loneliness as his two brothers are older and don't live at home anymore, his heartbreak when death happens, his joy when eating toast or lemon pie. They felt joyful but left me hungry for more: I would have liked them to be longer, and to give me more details.
