grantahedrick 's review for:
Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens
by Tanya Boteju
I absolutely loved the queer exclusivity in this novel! It was very refreshing to have a queer woman of color as the protagonist, and even better: she discovers the drag king scene! Not just drag queens (though she becomes friends with a lovely trans drag queen on her journey) but KINGS! This sub-set of queer ballroom culture is so overlooked, it was very uplifting to see.
Nima is an honest, if sometimes irksome narrator. She is VERY shy, and even as a shy kid in my teen years, I was still Begging her to just push a little bit harder to get what she wanted. But, that being said, her character arc is dynamic and whole, filled with hardships and twists, and difficulty, but by the end she was better for it all.
If you like the drag scene, slow building confidence, and strong characters: read this book
