Quick note about clarity over trigger warnings: I don’t necessarily always want trigger warnings but I will still look at them. The author has a warning for ritualistic sex, and I only realized what that meant after reading. I think it’s a bit unfair for readers to know what ritualistic sex would mean in this book specifically before reading. I THINK the author is talking about the involvement of blood in the smut. I feel like that should be its own trigger in itself.
This book was interesting.
What I liked: healthy sex in a dark romance. It doesn’t have any of the disgusting romanticized violence masking smut. Lots of communication, independent (to an extent) and rebellious FMC, and intentional intimacy. Lots and lots of praise and appreciation.
This book is also self admitted insta-lust. It doesn’t pretend that it’s not insta lust which I find very annoying.
The intentional intimacy is very refreshing. MMC does a lot of caressing, kissing everywhere, aftercare, appreciating everything, praise, etc. although it did feel very physical, it didn’t feel like he was using her.I still don’t like how he almost always has to compliment sexually in his head through. Very cute and wholesome even with every dark themes. Some of the spice was very healthy. You could say all of it was, it’s not like it wasn’t, but some scenes are explicitly focused on a very healthy dynamic. 6/5 spice. If you want a book with no weird subtly gross and violent (but I’m not talking snorkeling kinky or dark. These two are KINKY and FREAKY) - this is that book. Healthy freaky sex.
What I didn’t like: the author tries to be overly poetic and it’s doing too much. It’s very forced, she’s spelling out for the reader. Sometimes it’s so overt it gets a little annoying. The MMC reads The Great Gatsby so he’s #different, and she will literally tell you (opposed to not reading at all).
The perfectly moral ambiguity of the MMC is also disarming. Of course he HAS to be a running illegal activities that are successful and profitable AND morally integral. “He does bad things but he does far greater good than bad”. I’m pretty sure that’s paraphrasing the FMC multiple times. It is SO obvious that the author is trying to make the MMC digestible for the audience to not offend people’s morals. Maybe this is realistic and this does exist. I wouldn’t know. But the very obvious “he’s actually good” is irritating. It’s the same problem as before but in a different way. The author doesn’t know how to show, not tell.

Graphic: Blood
There’s multiple scenes that involve blood. One being period sex. The rest involve FMC causing MMC to bleed and MMC like that and making their blood a part of sex. I think this is what the author refers to ritualistic sex.
