Children of Blood and Bone
by Tomi Adeyemi
objectively, a good book—there are a lot of serious subjects that parallel our past and present events (adeyemi’s note at the end !!!) as well as how deeply ingrained culture is in the storytelling, but it was a bit hard to appreciate it because (1) i’m in a book slump (2) it’s definitely a book of its time (i.e., YA dystopian fantasy written in the late 2010s), which made me just keep thinking about sabaa tahir’s an ember in the ashes series.
here are my main issues:
- a bit too long and repetitive—i wish the chapters were longer so i could get to know the characters more and the magic system
- the romance between zelie and inan… i was not sold on it… At All; plus, i’m not a huge fan of coupling everyone up just because
