I would give Lovecraft higher than a five star rating if I could. He is one of the few authors where the story actually feels like it is wholly focused on the horror.
On the downside, if you like novels focusing on character development, you should look elsewhere. In Lovecraft's stories, the characters are essentially just vehicles for the reader to experience the horror at hand.
