The Hike
by Drew Magary
“The Hike” by Drew Magary starts off innocuous enough; a middle-aged father of three sets off on an afternoon hike in the Poconos before he has to suffer through a mundane business meeting in the worst hotel in the world. Quickly though the story takes a sharp turn and becomes something like a fucked up “Alice in Wonderland” paired with “The Odyssey” then thrown into a blender manned by a tyrannical God who’s taken too much cocaine. In short, it’s bonkers.
There aren’t a lot of authors these days that I would call fearless, but that’s exactly what Magary is; he had to be in order to plot this batshit insane tale. But, the insanity is what makes it fun. “The Hike” is an engaging adventure filled with corkscrew turns that will throw you backward and forward simultaneously while demanding that you stay on the path, or else. It will make you laugh so hard you will cry, and also, funnily, so emotionally drained and frustrated that you won’t be able to do anything but laugh. It’s also occasionally profound, with lines that will make you mark your pages with yellow smeared tracks and litter it with earmarks. It’s a ride you can’t wait to finish while also hoping it will never end. It completely, and utterly, kicks ass.
I could say more, but it’s impossible to tell you about the experience. Everyone needs something inside them that no one else can have. Hopefully you’ll take the time to experience “The Hike” and find yourself completely unable to tell anyone about it as well.
