I originally read this book in 2019 for a Biology class. I remembered it being really good, and I like Michael Crichton’s work, so I decided to give it a reread. I was so glad I did.
The book is what I call “Science Horror”, and it executed that really well. Many of the characters were well rounded, and the ones who weren’t, were written that way for the plot.
The only reason I deducted a star, originally, was for two reasons: the main character’s children were super annoying, and sometimes there was lengthy jargon that made the book a bit boring. Maybe Michael Crichton’s writing surrounding children hasn’t aged well (or it wasn’t good to begin with?) but I found the insults between the siblings very boring and unnecessary. Thank goodness the children are secondary to the plot. As for the jargon, it is science fiction, so there is an expectation for that, but at times I just had to put the book down and take a breath.
The book overall brings you back in though! I would highly recommend to someone who enjoys a thriller but also enjoys speculative science.
Updated this to a 5 star review! After much consideration, I loved this book.
