Moriarty the Patriot, Vol. 1 by Ryōsuke Takeuchi
4.0

Wow! The beginning really packs a punch, delving into Moriarty's childhood of poverty, where he's a victim of noble cruelty. It's such a super clever plot. Frighteningly clever. Stunning artwork, with an exciting, original concept. This is the origin story of Moriarty I never knew I needed. I love how scheming Albert is.

As the story progresses, I feel it fell flat a little. I was so intrigued by Albert and Louis, but they had almost ZERO impact on the story after the "prologue" as children, which was a real shame. I was almost more interested in them than Moriarty, who is a character any Doyle fan knows already.

Volume 1 gives me Black Butler vibes, but less exciting. There is one overall story arc linking the volumes, but each volume has individual stories/cases per issue/episode. However, where Black Butler focuses on one case per episode/or over multiple episodes, this one has multiple cases within this volume and that meant the stories/characters didn't really get the chance to shine as much as they should have.

The story is interesting, and I'm intrigued to see how the characters progress in later volumes. I'm not ready to give up, yet, but I do hope for more exploration of characterisation. This could have been a 5*, but the cases are so similar in concept with little originality, especially in terms of Moriarty's part - vengeance against a noble, noble dies, case is solved but they're no closer to a solution to the real problem. I'm hoping for a little more growth in the next volume.
