Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 1 by Mizuho Kusanagi

5.0

REREAD

this first volume is everything. we get vivid and distinctive characters. the perfect balance of a hard hitting beginning and deep dive flashbacks.

yona starts as a very sheltered princess, obsessed with her hair and with a childhood crush on her cousin. it's easy to dismiss her as shallow but she's a character with so much space to grow and learn.

hak would die for her, that's all you need to know.

su-won wrecked a perfect ot3, that man has issues. it hurts to see the gentle soul he was a child versus the man capable of comitting attrocities.

we get the start of an intriguing worldbuilding that slowly unfolds thought each volume. it's been years since i've first read this manga and it's still very solid. the story and the artwork are standout.

CW : death of a parent, sword wounds, arrow wounds, unwanted advances
