Professor Ghodsee is a very skilled and knowledgeable communicator, her other scholarly work fills out the story presented here as an introduction and polemic. For the reader looking for an introduction to former state socialist countries and life under those regimes, this is a good primer. The gendered view is such an interesting way to highlight the differences between capitalist and non-capitalist societies. However, I was really looking for more here-- for the already-committed socialist (or even social democrat), nothing was really new to me. If you want a few new talking points for your agitation, this is a good start, but for those looking for more details, you can mine Ghodsee's well-sourced list of further readings (for which I'm grateful).
