Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
4.0

I'm happy I finally got to this masterpiece: a story of love in many shapes and forms (including a triangle), of violence (including towards dogs), of nature vs. nurture and an awful oppression of women. Brontë writes beautifully and with a great deal of humor, sarcasm even, despite the mostly tragic tale. Although it may not be received so tragic or violent in Victorian times, for death was a much more familiar subject, not as tabooed as it is now. Perhaps.
Lovers in this story yearn to be near, yet they find it mostly unbearable when their longing is fulfilled. The strongest love (literally maddening) could only be to the dead — the perfectly unattainable object. Yet this is a love story with the happy ending, which brings me hope :)
