Today I will be briefly reviewing Fatherland, an alternative history mystery and suspense book.
I had a wild fascination with WW2 and naturally I have read and I am reading a lot of fiction and non fiction books on it. Sometimes, I find myself thinking what would happen if Hitler had won the war? Would we all be blond, blue eyed gods, a master race? How would everyday life be?
Robert Harris comes in with this book in which he managed to create a believable and terrifying Nazi State. The story takes place in 1960s and follows Kriminalpolizei
Sturmbannführer detective Xavier March in his search to uncover the truth behind the mysterious deaths of High Rank Nazi Officers, while at the same time he risks his life.
History is very well researched here and while the book is fiction, a lot of real Nazi torture methods and ideas which had been drafted to be implemented if Germnay won the war, have been incorporated in the story, creating a terrifying environment. Harris provides enough detail on the state and government, as well as the surrounding Berlin areas our protagonist explores. The romantic subplot was also pleasant.
The characters are very well developed and reach a fill circle by the end of the book. I enjoyed the mystery and action as well as the careful hints the author planted here and there as the story progressed. I enjoyed it far more than the Man in The High Castle, which is also a Nazi Alternative History book.
