The Next Always by Nora Roberts

5.0

Beckett Montgomery along with his brothers and eccentric mother are giving the historic Hotel/Inn in Boonsboro a rehab. Armed with his architectural skills and little social time, he's all work and good at it. In his not so subtle way, he has eyes for Claire since she was fifteen and visits her bookstore often enough to get a good look at her.

Claire Murphy, or Brewster after her marriage, returned home when her husband was killed in Iraq. Now, with three boys, a business, and her best friend Avery, she's busy. As she tries to make her business work, she's drawn to the construction across the street at the Inn. As she gets invested in the Inn, she gets invested in Beckett too.

I absolutely love this trilogy. It's the second time reading this book. I love that there is a historical theme surrounding the Inn. I also love that Inn Boonsboro is a real place and that I can look at the pictures online and put images to the descriptions.

As always, Roberts has amazing skill at creating complex, relateable, and connecting characters. You get invested in their stories because they are rounded, they have families, and there is little left for you to want or need to know about them. They are real and they leave an imprint on you. The Inn has a hold on them and by the end of the book, that hold starts to grab you too as much as the characters do.

It's hard not to be invested in the story and it always leaves you wanting to know more, see more, or to continue reading past the end.
