Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

2.0

GO SET A WATCHMAN is a disappointment to say the least. Scout has soured into a young woman coming home to a disgruntled and racist Atticus. The majority of the novel concerns her coming to grips with her father's attitude towards race and her affections towards Henry. At best it's dull, and at its worst downright offensive.

The only saving grace are flashback sequences of a younger Scout and her escapades with Jem and Dill interspersed throughout the present day narrative. These flashbacks are imbued with vividness and energy, reminiscent of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Much credit must go to the editor of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD in reading this book and seeing the potential for an infinitely superior classic.
