The Haunted Hotel
by Wilkie Collins
Snore! I had good hopes for this book ā 19th century gothic murder mystery, orange penguin, bargain from Lifeline, hooked by the first chapter. How could I not like this? I was hoping for something exciting, and I did well to stay level-headed with the increasingly complicated plot. But after a point it got too difficult for me to follow. Somewhere along the line I got confused, and for the last two thirds of the book I had no idea what was going on. It was also so boring and slow ā a chore to force myself to read yet not retain about two hundred pages riding on the long Action bus trips into uni. Also, I thought Dr Wybrow was the protagonist, but he never got another mention after the first few chapters?? Maybe if this was heavily edited into a movie, I would understand it. Iām sick of disappointing Romantic period gothic texts for now (save Dracula, I'm definitely reading that again). Time to change genres and look for something a bit more exciting i.e. a nostalgic 80s sci-fi screen-novel adaptation.
