Axios: A Spartan Tale by Jaclyn Osborn
5.0
** 5 stars and all the other stars in the sky! **
After the first chapter, I already knew that this book was going to be a favorite of mine but was also going to leave me as an emotional mess and I was right !
I admit, I was anxious before starting Axios because Sparta, antiquity and m/m romance combined is all I've ever wanted in a book ! But then, because of that, I had expectations so high that I was afraid of being disappointed.
Let me tell you that it was not the case ! I recommend this book to everyone, should you love ancient Greece or not, because while the focus of the story is not on history and war, per say, you cannot talk about Sparta without learning about those elements and Sparta’s culture was one of a kind and marked history by his uniqueness.
Nevertheless, I was really satisfied by the way the historical aspect of the book was approached and developed and the way we were immerged in a different time and different society.
Now, let’s move on to the actual story and the characters.
I really really liked Axios because he’s not perfect but he’s real. He doesn’t really blend in the society he lives in and he longs for things he knows he can’t have. He’s compassioned, kind and loyal and had to learn though lesson from a young age. Even though he managed to embrace the Spartan way of life, I feel like he was able to stay true to himself deep in his heart, where it really matters.
Eryx, on the other hand, was very different. It was not difficult for him to be a true Spartan and to embrace the values and rules of Sparta. He always felt like he had things to prove and excelled in everything he did. But he had a loyal and gentle soul and his strength wasn’t just used in times of war but also in times of love.
Even though they had different beliefs, points of view and aspirations, they were perfect together because they completed each other and what was between them was just of the purest kind. This book described perfectly their connection, the development of their relationship and the way they were just two parts of the same soul, forever meant to be united.
“In this life and the next.”
I need to mention the fact that I came to care about not only Axios and Eryx but also about all the other side characters that really completed this story. They were all important and unique.
While this book is longer than most, it didn’t matter to me, I never wanted it to end and every page was interesting and important. And when the story did end, well… I wasn’t expecting anything else or less. It’s hard to describe the feelings that went through me at that moment but I wouldn’t change the way it ended because the whole story led to that moment.
It was one of the most beautiful tales I’ve had the chance to read and I will forever remember it. Thank you, dear author, for writing such a beautiful story and for giving life to Axios and Eryx.
