Peace Like a River by Leif Enger

5.0

What a great way to end my reading in 2017. I absolutely loved this book.

The story at it's core is about a single dad and his three children. The oldest, Davy, commits a crime and escapes rather than be convicted. The dad and other two children take a road trip to try to find him. It's all narrated by an older Reuben, the middle child, looking back on this time in their lives. The plot is not was definitely not a page-turner, yet I found myself devouring this book. Each character was crackling with life and had distinctive qualities that set them apart. The dad was a praying man and miracles often happened around him. Swede, the youngest, was a poet and wise-beyond-her-years. (Her epic ballad poetry of the wild west was such a fun addition to this book.) Davy was a skeptic yet fiercely protective of those he loved. Even all the side characters had so much to add to the story.

This book touched on themes of family, faith, integrity/honor and is one of the most beautifully written books I've read in a long time. I found myself rereading phrases here and there because of the sometimes surprising way Leif Enger could turn a phrase.

I highly recommend this book.
