Always Human by Ari North

If you are looking for good disability representation, this is perfect for you. In a future where mods can help people learn faster, treat diseases, or even change one’s appearances, there are some that have an auto-immune disorder which prevent them from using these mods.

Sunati loves to use body mods and can always be found with brightly colored hair and unusual features. She is first drawn to Austen by her “natural” appearance and seeming bravery.

Throughout the story, they must navigate their relationship, learn to communicate with each other, and Sunati must move past biases and misunderstandings about Austen’s disability.

As the author says, despite the futuristic setting, the characters really, truly are “Always Human”.

This book has disability rep, gender non-conforming rep, sapphic rep, and racial diversity. What’s not to love? It’s an amazing and beautifully drawn love story that resonates so deeply.

I would recommend this graphic novel to anyone who needs more diversity in their books, who likes new sci fi ideas, and romance.
