David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

4.0

I have so many feelings.

That was the most surprising part of it all. I enjoyed my first real foray into [a:Charles Dickens|239579|Charles Dickens|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1387078070p2/239579.jpg] much more than I could've anticipated, but I never expected to become so invested. I can honestly say [b:David Copperfield|28464497|David Copperfield|Charles Dickens|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1524531180l/28464497._SX50_.jpg|4711940]moved me - to happiness, anger, laughter, frustration, and pretty much everything else on the emotional spectrum - in a way no other classic work has so far. And I still can't wrap my mind around that. I have favourite classics, certainly, and ranking higher than this in my heart, but I always felt there was a distance in such works, in their very style and literary status, that I could appreciate and even love... But not necessarily be affected by, at least compared to their modern counterparts. I'm happily surprised to discover otherwise.

It would be remiss of me not to mention (as if I can stop myself) [a:Richard Armitage|1808790|Richard Armitage|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1529406061p2/1808790.jpg]'s performance in this audiobook. I honestly cannot emphasise how much his incomparable narration enlivened the story, and how great his voice talent is - the 'vocal personalities' he gave to all the distinct characters would've been impressive enough for me, along with the clarity of his diction, but the sheer variety of accents and vernaculars he has in his repertoire really was astounding. Thanks to that, I could 'recognise' speakers during dialogue better than I could have in reading! It was a joy to listen to.

A truly memorable book.
