The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

5.0

For this, I'm going with 4.5 stars!

It was a very engaging book, a bit longer than the regular graphic novel, not to mention the design and cover are beautiful.

Now, let's talk about the real issues; in most reviews, I read that people didn't like Marjane because she was rude and often her attitude was off-putting. Even though, I can't relate to her personality, her behaviour is very realistic. A rebellious teenager, a product of environment with a smart mouth is someone we all have known.

Her behaviour can be attributed to the freedom her parents wanted her to experience which was a stark contrast with what the authorities outside presented. Many times, she had to face dire consequences because of her behaviour, which proved to be valuable life lessons! Her grandmother and parents were ahead of their time and allowed her to make mistakes on her own, moulding her into strong, defiant woman.

The brash characters are an accurate representation of the mindset of countries in Asia. Too often, we laugh at foreigners panicking over "small things" like war and conflict.

Excellent read. The only negative thing that comes to mind is the really small font in the paperback version I have! Oh well.
