Book 68: The Breakaways by Cathy G. Johnson

Read this graphic novel after I saw it in an article about the 50 books Texas parents would like to have banned from school libraries. This book is on the list because not only does it feature a transgender character, but also shows two characters kissing in bed. Book is reviewed for 3rd grade and higher.

Synopsis: Quiet, sensitive Faith starts middle school already worrying about how she will fit in. To her surprise, Amanda, a popular eighth grader, convinces her to join the school soccer team, the Bloodhounds. Having never played soccer in her life, Faith ends up on the C team, a ragtag group that’s way better at drama than at teamwork. Although they are awful at soccer, Faith and her teammates soon form a bond both on and off the soccer field that challenges their notions of loyalty, identity, friendship, and unity.

Review: Picked this graphic novel up because I wanted to see what all the fuss about the book was, and you know I enjoy graphic novels. Not sure I enjoyed this book though. My lack of enjoyment was due to the scattered story line, the art was confusing to me at points, it was disjointed all the way around. The author tried to fit too much in, trying to represent all the things, and fell a bit flat for me. Not a lot of bang for my buck, my rating 2.5 ⭐️.
