On the Ice by Amy Aislin
5.0
On The Ice was my first Amy Aislin book and it DEFINITELY won’t be my last. After seeing the newest book in this series all over Instagram, I had to give this one a go and I’m SO glad I did - I absolutely fell in love with Mitch and Alex.
Alex Dean is a professional hockey player who’s been put on IR because of a broken arm. While he’s out of commission, he’s in Vermont visiting his sick grandfather and helping his college friends while he’s in town. Alex is demisexual, but not publicly because of his position as a professional athlete. He’s sweet, confident, down-to-earth and more comfortable in himself than any character I’ve read. His connection to his mother and grandfather warmed my heart and showed how great of a guy he was underneath everything.
Mitch Greyson is a sophomore in college and is one of the star players for the school’s hockey team. He’s incredibly dedicated to his dream of becoming a professional player, even going as far as working two jobs and tutoring other students to keep his dream alive. Mitch is so smart, bold and unfiltered but feels like he needs to be stronger emotionally than anyone else around. After his mother and brother seemingly show their distaste for him and his career choice after years of neglect and abuse from his mother, he’s terrified of rejection and guards his heart by building walls a mile high.
This is a hockey romance, but it’s so much more than that. The slow burn aspect and the handling of Alex’s demisexuality made their relationship feel real to me - it gave them (and me) time to truly get to know each other in a way they both needed, whether they knew it or not. They have so many incredibly sweet moments together that have nothing to do with sex and helped each other through some really difficult, life-changing events, Alex and Mitch both grew and changed over the course of the story and became even better together because of it.
I loved these two and this story so much that I never wanted it to end. Already looking forward to the next book in the series to get back to this world Amy Aislin created!
