Beg, Borrow, or Steal by Sarah Adams

I have loved this series and Sarah Adams is a gem, but so far, the first book was my favorite. I am hopeful about the last book in the Rome series, also.

Emily (the sister of Noah, book 1; and Annie, book 2) is a teacher with a secret past time of writing her first spicy romance novel in her free time. When her arch nemesis from college (who also teaches with her) buys the dilapidated house next door, she feels completely annoyed (but not annoyed to walk over in her sexy lingerie, which she wears for herself). Jack(son)’s dad is a best selling mystery writer and he has his own secret writing hobby.

“Like any good hostile relationship, our animosity wasn’t built on one single moment but rather a collection of many, many little ones that have snowballed into something greater. And now, after a decade of interacting, we have collected so many we could open a museum full of hatred memorabilia.” Ch 1

“What he lives for: pulling the rug out from under me and delighting in the chaos.” Ch 2

I really thought this would be my dream of a book - two secret book writers who are teachers. They are so in my world. I love the town of Rome and the siblings and their careers.

Emily was not my favorite character though. She just barges into places without people’s consent and tries to control how the town sees her nemesis. There is also a scene involving the principal where she overstepped and in the real world, would have lost her teaching license (because she would have been caught on cameras in today’s world). That scene was kind of tough for me to read, as an educator.

All of that to say, there were moments in the book I loved. I do think she tried to honor the value of teaching, “We become the kind of teachers we needed.”
(Ch 23). Other things I liked might be spoilers, but I did like things about their relationship, relating to their hobbies.

“You are not alone, Emily. I would walk through my worst memories to get to you every single time.” Ch 13
