A Treacherous Performance by Lynn Messina
3.0
The characters and their various egotistical personalities really make this series. The mystery itself I generally enjoyed but did not love. I find the disguises improbable. And I do NOT understand why the aunt and uncle have to have this great change of heart. I liked the aunt better when she was assuring the Duke he could still back out.
But it is all still quite funny.
The biggest problem, though it isn't as bad as the last book, is that Beatrice continues to suffer from angsty mood swings. And there is no subtly about it. We're told, not really shown, everything. In fact, the book even acknowledges this!
"But the deadening repetition of her insecurities was precisely the problem, and she could not imagine anything more tedious than being called upon to soothe the same anxieties over and over."
Alas, if only Miss Hyde-Clare had as much sympathy for the reader as she does her fiance.
Otherwise, this truly is a fun book and I'm delighted with the entire series. I eagerly await the next one.
