Dear NHS: 100 Stories to Say Thank You by Adam Kay
5.0
10/10 : There’s nothing quite like a global pandemic to make us here in the UK realise how fucking lucky we are to have the NHS. Free. To all. ALL. Regardless of class, race, sex, age, ability. The Tories (yep, those fuckers again) are hell bent on destroying it, with systematic underfunding, so they can sell off & privatise it, bit by bit. However, there’s also nothing quite like a global pandemic to highlight just how stoic, reliable & incredible the NHS is, because despite huge risk to their own lives, those who serve it have gone above & beyond to care with kindness & compassion, for not only the ‘day-to-day’ sick, but also be the front line against COVID-19. No matter how overworked, underpaid & underfunded they are. This book, put together by Adam Kay, contains 100 (and 9) letters of thanks, from various well known household names. It’s a super read, and as you’d expect with a bunch of stories about the NHS, there are highs (Sue Perkins, naked, with a hoover attachment up her bum), lows (loved ones passing), & everything in between (Daisy May Cooper’s enormous postnatal poo), but the biggest take home from this book is how fortunate & thankful we all are, & will continue to be, for the NHS. It might not be perfect, such a thing doesn’t exist, but if this pandemic hasn’t made us all incredibly grateful for what we have, then it hasn’t taught us much at all. A great read. Oh, and, THANK YOU, NHS
