Josslyn Drake is a pampered socialite who becomes infected with magic, which is essentially a death sentence under the empire. She teams up with Jericho Nox, a dangerous criminal, in the hopes of ridding herself of the magic and returning to her comfortable life, but as Josslyn learns more about her partner in crime, magic and the empire, she begins to question everything she thought she knew. Echoes and Empires does rely on popular fantasy tropes, but as a big fan of a morally grey love interest, I didn't really mind. I would have appreciated a bit more world building, but it was an entertaining read nonetheless.
