I honestly wish I could give Spark of the Everflame four stars but I was just too annoyed with our main character Diem. I thought it would get better but her character does not seem to have much growth in this book. I had read other reviews stating she was an annoying main character and I totally agree. First off, she makes very stupid decisions. I wanted to support her as the main character, but when the other characters yell at her or get angry with her I had to just agree with them. I pretty much liked all of the side characters and the plot was good which is why I was disappointed to have not liked Diem. I read that the other books get better, so I will give them a try. Another thing that bothered me was that I felt the relationship in this book felt rushed. I did not feel a connection with the main love relationship at all and honestly wondered what he saw in her.
As a fantasy tale it was pretty solid. A lot of suspense, unanswered questions at the end, and my copy of the book had an enjoyable bonus chapter that gets you excited to read on. The world and magic system also seem interesting and not a lot was revealed in this first book, so I assume that book two will have a lot more answers.
At this moment I can't say one way or another if you should read this series, I will make that decision after I read the next book.
I was entertained and gave the book three stars, which from me isn't a bad rating, but my opinion on the series as a whole can't come until I've read on. I felt similarly when reading A Court of Thorns and Roses, I wasn't super impressed with book one (although Feyre wasn't the problem) but book two and three were really good. We shall see what this series has in store!
