Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey
4.0

I have a soft spot for the sapphic western genre. I don’t what it is? Perhaps the horses and the open skies that I have only seen in Kevin Costner westerns. The idea of femaleness in a rough and what was mostly patriarchal world. TV has taught me women in westerns were brothel workers or shot gun wielding wives with tons of children. But this book broke that stereotype this book was about women who are librarians sneaking antifacist materials across the prairie in a society that has collapsed and turned its back on modernity and returned to wilder days. In a time when the trump facist regime is attacking education and reversing protections this book hits which was interesting because it was published between 2016-2019. IDK?

The idea that we need to go back to better times with a conservative values type Christian facism with a population that has less access to education is what the librarians are fighting against. It’s high western fantasy with antifacism message at its core and it’s short like just over 100 pages with a cute little side queer romance. It reminds me of those midday b fantasy television shows like lost girl or Wynonna Earp that I enjoyed when times were less complicated.
