I've thought no book could be better than Dune. I was wrong. Dune's Messiah is THE masterpiece. Paul Atreides is no hero, he is a noble - that are also a mentat (with Bene Gesserit training) - caught up in a political crisis. He exploits religion and culture - as all charismatic leaders do (it's almost like it was intended as a cautionary tale...) - to take advantage of the Fremen and save his own skin (and go back to a power position). Oh and I am also amazed by the fact that Paul knows his future but there is not much he can do, he is trapped in what life made of him.
