“I could force you to tell me the truth.” The flat of my thumb presses between his brows. “I could thrall you.” His smile looks sad. “You already have, Misery.”
BRIDE brings to major publishing what those of us who grew up reading... ahem... interesting fanfiction love: plot and pacing that’s easy to follow, uncomplicated yet effective world building, and slow burn romance that comes to a satisfying head.
this book is the perfect introduction to modern paranormal romance, featuring the dryly humorous vampyre, Misery Lark, and her counterpart, a fierce but fair were, Lowe Moreland. along with facing their confusing but undeniable chemistry, these two opposites must also navigate the mysterious disappearance of the only person Misery has ever truly cared for, maneuver through the multifaceted political intrigue of species on the brink of war, and enjoy the treat that is the spice Ali Hazelwood fans have come to expect — steamy and worth the wait.
much of the story moves forward by giving the reader a front row seat to Misery’s thoughts, which are anything but miserable. she delivers sensuous imagery, from exposed throats and silky veins to smooth peanut butter and odd-colored eyes, while also revealing the confusion, doubt, anxiety, and chaos that often whirls through her mind. despite her insistence that she is indifferent to her circumstances, Misery longs for a sense of kinship – she just doesn’t expect it to come in the form of a solemn were and his pack.
maybe i loved this book so much because it was my first Ali Hazelwood, or maybe it's just that good, but there is no doubt that this is a book i was happy to devour, and be consumed by in turn.
p.s. i've both read and listened to this one. the audiobook narration kinda sucks – no pun intended. i highly recommend sticking to a physical read of this one!
