Dracula
by Bram Stoker
3.75
Good. Loved a lot. Disliked some. What else is there to say? A lot...
1) Loved the first few bits of the novel- Johnny Boy in Dracula's castle was AWESOME. Wish we could have gotten wayyyy more of that! Additionally, I adored the whole section with Lucy <3 She has my heart! I would totally have been her fourth suitor... Alas, she would have chosen Art over me, but... That's okay. Art's dope... I guess...
2) Found myself caring for the group of human baddies as a whole. I didn't think I was that attached to them all that much, but then the ending made me cry... So, yes. I obviously cared. However, I will say that I think I preferred their dynamic as a group more than the characters individually.
3) The atmosphere was beautifully crafted. I honestly felt like I was experiencing the story along with the characters. Spooky. Gothic. Dark. Gorgeous.
4) Hated the sexist bits... Like, I REALLY, really hated them. *Sigh*
5) I found the characters to be slightly inconsistent and dumb at times. I mean.... It was annoying and took me out of the story. It also made me fall out of love with some characters.
6) That ending tho... Disappointing.
7) To end on a positive note- I learned a lot about the cultural tradition of vampires in Western literature/cinema as a result of reading this book. I can see how Bram Stoker's ideas have affected our collective understanding of the vampire as a creature and its use in storytelling. I view a lot of other vampire stories and characters much differently now that I've read Dracula. So, that is absolutely phenomenal :)
Overall, I recommend! (However, people constantly say that if you love Frankenstein, you'll love Dracula... They are nothing alike. So, I don't think that is a fair assessment.)
