I really enjoyed this book. The overarching plot was interesting, and I found the ending very satisfying. However, I can not get over the age gap in the romantic subplot. I did not think the romantic subplot added much at all, they could have done like a father-daughter type dynamic between our main characters without losing any of the stakes or growth that the relationship lends to the plot. This dude is more than a century older than our protagonist. Please stop, she’s like 17, too, so it’s super weird to me. I love the whole concept of a forest that is full of malice and tries to kind of take over the world by force. I like that, in the end, you learn
that the forest is angry for good reason. The being behind the anger was betrayed by those she trusted, and she saw people as just trying to cut down the trees that were actually her family and her people. As such, to defend those trees and in retribution for the damage they had caused, she forced people into the trees.
I also loved the magic in this book, and the way that magic is typically a rigid scientific-type discipline but to others can be a softer more artsy craft.
