The Civil War of Amos Abernathy by Michael Leali

5.0

Excellent, nuanced story about a boy’s search to learn more about queer people in history at the same time he’s trying to navigate a friendship that could be more, if not for homophobic interference. The novel has an interesting structure, alternating chapters that are letters to a historical figure and in-the-moment chapters depicting the day where everything comes to a head. Amos is an appealing character, vulnerable with his emotions, curious about history, and always open to learning more about how to be inclusive and an ally. Highly recommended.
