Winter's Dawn is rather more serious than the other two books in this world, with the main character imprisoned for treason and locked away from being able to use his magic. In desperation and fear, he forms a friendship with the murderer in the cell next door, and with a rat that visits his cell and eats his crumbs. He's even drawn out by one of the guards, he's so desperate to talk.

The book deals with betrayal, incarceration, isolation, starvation -- and though there is a happy-ish ending of sorts, it's very much not the fluff of The Bachelor's Valet or the sexytimes of The Botanist's Apprentice. Thomas has been deeply wronged, and so has Winter, and they've both done some pretty awful things (Thomas assisted with the magical bindings of the prison, while Winter has killed people). This is a much darker story.
