Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
4.0

I read this for a Victorian Literature course, and I’m so glad we studied it. Hardy’s views, though they may seem tame today, were incredibly controversial in his period, and much of the original text was actually censored.

The institutionalization of marriage is one of Hardy’s biggest critiques in this novel, and he depicted it quite well. The writing overall is easy to read - in the context of class lit - and I wasn’t bored at all. A great introduction to Hardy, or classics in general!
