Drifting House
by Krys Lee
3.5 stars. I read this for my comparative literature class and I'll be curious to hear what the professor has to say about it.
1. The Goose Father. Probably my favorite because it was the most tender story imo. The karaoke scene was excellent, and I enjoyed the end too.
2. A Small Sorrow. I loved Eunkang and the conversation she had with Mina. Neither woman budged. And I liked how she approached her marriage following that moment.
3. Drifting House. A chilling start sets off the rest of the story. Those poor boys. So many of the stories in this collection deal with loss of a parent but still terrible how they were abandoned and how they coped in the aftermath.
4. The Pastor's Son. This one grew on me the more I read. The ending caught me by surprise but I liked it. I appreciated Adeul-ah and Hyeseon had a sort of alliance there.
5. The Believer. Umm... YIKES???? I feel like I should like it less but frankly despite the bad parts, or frankly because of the bad parts, this story is fantastic in playing with the taboo and showing what extremes people go to when faced with an awful reality.
6. A Temporary Marriage. Interesting how we never fully seem to get what happened that led to the dad taking away the girl. We know he won custody, but did he deserve it? Did he actually bribe the judges back in Korea? I wonder.
7. The Salaryman. Poor guy. I had to do research about Korea in 1997 to get the full context. The scene where his old friend recognizes him is so sad, to recognize just how far he's fallen.
8. At the Edge of the World. The end!! I was so happy. I felt bad for the father who obviously loves that kid and was just stuck grieving (understandably) for his brother.
9. Beautiful Women. I didn't like the structure of this one as much, but I understand why it had to be that way as a series of vignettes. Hana and Mina were interesting to follow.
