In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune

3.0

I know with musicians there's the concept of a "sophomore slump"--where the second album isn't necessarily as acclaimed as the first. While this isn't Klune's second book by any stretch, the feeling sort of applies for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed The House in the Cerulean Sea and Under the Whispering Door, but this one was a bit of a struggle for me to get through. Klune does a great job of making the majority of robot characters feel realized and anthropomorphizing them so that you enjoy them (for the most part), but I couldn't stand Rambo the roomba and even Nurse Ratched got to be a bit iffy at points. That said, the world the book takes place in feels realized and has an interesting vibe that made getting through the parts that took me out worth it.

I'm going to keep looking for more of the author's work, but I don't think this one is going to make it into the re-read list.
